This 3-day Doctoral School in collaboration with Ghent University offers PhD students, postdocs, and professionals from the industry an integrated approach on essential safety concepts. The focus is on chemical safety in laboratories and the safe scale-up of chemical experiments towards pilot plants and industrial-scale pilot installation. The training includes site visits to Johnson and Johnson Innovative medicines and Bluechem.
The activity is limited to 20 PhD students and postdocs to promote hands-on knowledge transfer and people from the chemical and life sciences industry mixed with industry participants.
The program of the activity is divided into 3 days:
- The first day starts with a theoretical explanation of intrinsic chemical hazards and risks at lab-scale, including the relevant research aspects on the REACH regulation to ensure life cycle safety.
- The second day focuses on the reaction chemistry of two pilot plants in the Flemish region, including focus on the upmost important aspect on safety of the pilot plant and influences on the final upscaling.
- The third day treats road maps for chemical process innovation in an incubator towards real-life realisations
