INNOVATION & PATENTS

The chemicals and life sciences sector is the undisputed champion of innovation. In 2016, the sector’s companies spent € 4 billion on innovation, which is 60% of total R&D expenditure by the private sector in Belgium. Two factors account for this:

  • The intermediary position of the chemical industry, between the producers of crude raw materials on one hand and the many sector users on the other. Due to the diversity of the client sectors, innovation in this field has a major leverage effect.
  • The extremely complex and regulated process inherent in the research and the development of medicines and vaccines.
