The chemical and life science industry provides solutions and improves the quality of life of everyone. It could even be said that sustainable development is an evolving process whereby R&D has as its mission contributing continually through innovations that it develops. The chemical and life science industry is also acutely aware of its responsibilities and recognises the need to protect the environment and human health, while offering safe, effective products and services. This requires not only a new way of thinking, working and communicating, but also a new way of consuming. The role of the consumer is critical. This is why the chemical and life science industry has become partners with authorities and all stakeholders whose participation and expertise are essential for the appropriate handling of chemical products and management of crises and accidents involving chemical products (Belintra system); providing objective information for the consumer; the training of users; and continually seeking to improve energy performance through voluntary agreements between chemical companies and with consulting NGOs. The chemical industry is making a serious effort to tailor its production processes according to the objectives of sustainable development. The industry has made spectacular progress in the areas of environmental protection, the efficient use of energy, safety and health. Furthermore, the sector is involved in building on its achievements in these domains. This commitment, formalised by the signing on of directors of businesses concerned, is called the Responsible Care programme.
