A global approach for a multi-faceted concept
|
Today, sustainable development is still a concept recognised only in respect to the environment, which is to say the preservation of our planet. This approach is, however, outdated. Sustainable development is multi-faceted and covers many domains: climate change, natural resources, energy demands, population growth, transportation, food and health issues, housing, the fight against poverty, the balance between northern and southern countries, etc. Addressing any of these issues individually is impossible without involving the others. Economic, ecological, social and ethical concerns are all part of a huge puzzle. These global challenges require a three-pronged approach to address economic, social and environmental issues while respecting concerns of time (today and tomorrow) and place (here and elsewhere). These often diverging and contradictory problems must also be included in a global approach integrating the three "pillars" of sustainable development. Worth noting also is that certain experts would like to add a cultural dimension as a fourth pillar of sustainable development.
